Evaluate soybean varieties for management of Dectes stem bore in soybeans; Joanne Whalen ( University of Delaware) ($3376). The Project Manager's email is jwhalen@udel.edu.

Key Words: Decetes Stem Borer

Over the past few years, Dectes Stem Borer populations have been increasing statewide, causing as much as a 10 -30% yield loss due to lodging. Despite efforts to find an effective control measure to reduce the lodging losses from this insect pest, there has been little success in reducing yield losses. Results of the University of Delaware’s 2009 Soybean Variety Trials indicate that there were several varieties that had significantly less lodging compared to other varieties. Two varieties that had the least and two varieties that had the greatest amount of lodging loss in the 2009 Delaware Soybean Variety Trials will be evaluated. With the introduction of new varieties and recent promising research at Kansas State University, the usefulness of host plant resistance as a viable method for Dectes stem borer management is being re-evaluated in 2010.
