Key Words: Phytophthora sojae, Phytophthora Root Rot
Phytophthora stem and root rot is a highly destructive disease of soybean, capable of infecting the plant at any stage of development. This project will assess the functions of two families of previously identified proteins in the plants’ ability to perceive the pathogen P. sojae and in mediating the virulence activity of this pathogen. Understanding these processes will help generate resistance to P. sojae and reduce the emergence of new virulent races. Novel strategies for soybean protection against microbial pests could be developed, thereby reducing crop loss and increasing soybean production in an environmentally friendly manner.
